STEP 9: Enhance With Style and Functionality
Now that you have completed the rough layout, break up and content of your mind map, it’s time to take advantage of the ‘super power’ that comes with ‘top end’ mind mapping software.
It’s time to add some important elements to your mind map that will not only make your mind map stand out but will make the content so much easier to understand and remember.
You now need to:
- add color;
- add images;
- bold, italicize and underline relevant words;
- stylize the branches (by fattening and curving them where appropriate);
- change the appearance of various borders;
- box and stylize some of the text on the branches;
- add ‘envelopes’ around a sub-branch, if necessary, to group the content and make it easier on the eye;
- create hypertext links on your mind map (where appropriate) to link the reader of a digital version of your mind map to another location (either on your computer or somewhere on the internet) where they can access additional, valuable information;
- add branch images to highlight certain branches or, when used throughout the mind map, to group various similar branches; and
- add non-branch text boxes so that you can add important information to your mind map such as a copyright message, your name and title (to grow your profile), your firm’s logo, additional commentary (but not too much) and anything else that aids the readers understanding.
The above list is long and you certainly don’t need to do all of the them … or even any of them. However, if you do use at least some of the above options, you will soon realise just how powerful computer mind mapping can be.
Remember, mind mapping is all about creating a visual map (to tap into your Visual Modality … as opposed to Auditory and Kinesthetic) in a summarized form of only the key information so that you or another reader can rapidly grasp the topic at hand.
