SimCAMM Rules – Step 1 of 10
Feb 7The following series of posts will set out in a little more detail the 10 Step process I call the SimCAMM Rules (Simplified Computer Aided Mind Mapping Rules). These rules are designed to take into account the fact that good mind mapping software automatically takes into account Dr Buzan’s mind mapping “laws” and, therefore, do not need to be considered in detail each time you mind map using special purpose computer software. Having said that, don’t skimp on learning Dr Buzan’s mind mapping “laws” at least once (from first principles) so you understand the basics. This includes reading his book (The Mind Map Book).

Step 1: Set Your Central Theme
Now, step 1 – decide on a central theme and type it onto your computer mind map.
Note, your Central Theme could be:
- a topic heading;
- a statement of purpose;
- the title and author of a book (when doing a book review) plus a picture of the book;
- a meeting date;
- a concept that you want to brainstorm;
- the name of a case that you want to summarise;
- the name of a trial matter that you are running;
- the title of a particular piece of legislation;
- the title of a proposed contract;
- the description of a letter you need to write; and so much more.
There are very few limitations.
You just want to make sure it is NOT too long or vague.
If at first you are not sure what your central theme should be, just write down anything that you currently think it ought to be and you can always come back and change or update it. That’s the beauty of mind mapping with computer software. You’re not locked in to what you first create. You can always improve on any part of your mind map.
