STEP 2: DUMP Content Onto Branches
Rapidly insert (or “dump”) all you content into your mind map.
Start with your high level branch concepts (ie, Level 1 Branches) to your central theme.
With computer mind mapping software type out your Level 1 Branch concepts quickly. You can always go back and move them around once you have a better picture of the ‘whole’ and what you’re trying to achieve.
NOTE: I only use hand drawn mind maps when I am caught without my laptop or desktop computer. At the first opportunity I get to sit in front of my computer I will transfer the hand drawn mind map onto my mind mapping software … provided, of course, the mind map is worthy of retention.
Here’s an example of a mind map with 5 branches:
After completing your Level 1 braches, add your Level 2 Branches.
These branches should be directly associated with your Level 1 branch.
You can see from the above diagram that there may be any number of Level 2 branches to each Level 1 branch. This is fine provided that your Level 2 branch is directly associated with your Level 1 branch.
If you start seeing too many Level 2 branches being created, sit back briefly and examine whether you can create additional Level 1 branches to separate them out … or … move some of your Level 2 branches to Level 3 as a sub-branch of an appropriate Level 2 concept.
Complete the rest of your mind map using as many levels as you believe are necessary.
You can see in figure 3 above that as you add new branch levels, some of the branches may start overlapping. This will only happen if your software settings allow it. However, I have purposely included this diagram to show you that you should not worry about minor overlapping when you’re first creating your mind map. Remember, your goal is to dump all of your thoughts and ideas onto the mind map as quickly as possible (especially if you’re taking notes at a meeting). You can ‘pretty up’ your mind map later (the ‘pretty up’ stage is important but should be done later).
